Expanding the Challenge
Okay team, I have some Challenge news…and come challenging news. Hence my not-so-clever, but effective title.
The Challenge news will be obvious to most of you as of Friday, November 18th: 10 has a new look.
MY BUDDHA, IT ROCKS.
Well, I think so…and so do people who give out nifty, shiny web awards I’ll bet. Not that those interest me (read: won 27) but they never hurt. I wanted something that wasn’t so “non-10”, and frankly I was rather bored of looking at myself on every page in that goofy, “Hey, look what’s down MY pants!” shot. I figured the “me scaling the wall of 10 and staring at you with that look of “do it…DO IT…!” was not only more effective, but pretty damn funny-looking.
My business coach disagreed, saying, “Jon’ that jeans pic is your money shot!” I said, “Brett, that’s my phallic shot.” Then I ate him. He didn’t like my monkey fantasy, or my insect/diet theory, so it was “three strikes and your din-din”. It’s a law here in Texas. I think. Isn’t it? (No?…oh…hmmm. Then don’t tell anyone, okay? Good.) Strange, given my rather bizarre and twisted mind, the phallic aspect never entered my gray matter during that photoshoot. No, really.
That’s how dehydrated I was.
I’ve answered this before, but yes…those were my jeans. I had a pair 4 sizes larger, but I tossed them to Good Will. Man, I wish I had those around!
We’ll be adding some way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way (keep going until you run out of ways) cool things to the blog in the next few weeks. As of now, you have yourself an almost-ultra-cool search feature. And there was much rejoicing.
We had a cheesy version of a search before, but it would only search the actual entries and not the comments. And you KNOW how much I love my comments. Not to mention that our previous search didn’t allow for words to be highlighted and other Googleish niceties.
Ray (my HTML genius, perfectionist, code monkey, friend, colleague, lover, Canook and confidant in all things BLOG pitched in and really knocked this one out of Code Monkey Park. (Yes, I jumped on the back of the nearest Code Monkey…like I said, I’m curious. Despite the fact this isn’t my last day on earth, I am looking for Claire Forlani. Oprah, if you’re reading this, please find her, bathe her, and mail her to me first-class. Forever in your debt, Jon.)
That took a left turn, eh?
Now, we spared no expense for this search feature (read: free.) The code was trash, and you have to put up with near-spam from the provider. Oh, and please, ignore all those ads at the top of the search page. They suck. Really. S-U-C-K. Click on one and I’ll hunt you down like the click-on-an-ad-link dog that you are. Still, I deemed it mandatory. After all, how else can you be expected to find every reference of the following words/terms, which I KNOW you you lay awake at night dreaming about? —
Bugs
Glass
Conspiracy
Spank me
Protein
MasterMeals
Claire Forlani (God, that’s getting old…)
“Most doctors suck” (don’t forget the ” “)
And other such must-have-or-life-ceases-to-have-meaning-type stuff. So, there you go…you can thank me by sending money or used postage stamps.
Other Freakin’ Cool Features Of The New And Improved 10-in-10 Blog
Greedy little devils, aren’t you? Well, I anticipated that…so, check it:
- Your comments have some ‘style’ added to them. In a few days we’ll add a new style to ‘my’ comments back to you making them very easy to find. As you know, I love the comments…they’re often a blog within the blog, so this feature will really help you guys search down my pithy answers and then…well, that’s really it.
- Note if you will the clean, almost aerodynamic and ever-so-not-very-subtle buy this sidebar. I put groovy logos in there…that means it’s a real product, ya know.
- My soon-to-be-never-infamous “Stuff That Sucks” list. Do just as the header tells you — flee this. The list will be ongoing, and by the end of 10, you may require a good 10 minutes of scrolling just to read the darn thing.
- An easier access to historical blogs…and a “click here” for first-timers.
- Coming soon: a photo gallery. Yeah, baby…that means YOU, too!
- The other stuff that’s cool is really just for us web geeks.
Now, on to the second ‘challenge’ entry, and this isn’t nearly as fun: my personal challenge; i.e. the one I’m still facing.
As promised to you and myself, I woke up, re-shifted my thinking back to that of a bodybuilder, got my mental Jackson together (Jackson is another word for s—t), and I trained yesterday. Had a blast, too. Hit it hard. Still girly, but less girly than the past few workouts. Progression, man, progression.
The challenge is the lightheadedness that still follows my workouts. The first two had none to speak of; this one did. It was no where near the severity of the past year — that was so severe it forced me to quit training completely. Still, for about 45 minutes after the session, that old brain fog and “get up, grab something” stuff kicked in again.
The organic food is helping tremendously, but it’s not enough — and I believe I know what the problem is. This next week begins my alchemy. Thin the blood at all costs.
This means niacin therapy, higher fish oil intake, some funky herbs, and…oh boy…EDTA chelation therapy.
I’ll talk more about EDTA in another blog, but the short story is that EDTA is Roto-Rooter for the arteries. Still not approved by the FDA (no, NO! Shock of the century!! Tell me it isn’t so!!!), chelation with EDTA has been used successfully for decades in Europe for heart disease and other ailments (no, NO! Shock of the century!! Tell me it isn’t so!!!) EDTA is a great but painstaking way of flushing the junk out of the gunk.
No, I do not have heart disease…but each of us have ‘some’ blockages and hardening in our arteries. Autopsies performed on babies showed blockages already beginning to form — so much for the Lipitor/cholesterol theory. Don’t get me started.
My suspicions are two-fold: first, I have narrowed vessels in the brain that are not preventing enough hemoglobin during the blood pressure/heart rate “decreases” which occur post-exercise. Note: my lightheadedness is ‘not’ during exercise…big difference, and that would lead to different conclusions. This hemoglobin is crucial to feed the neuron-tissues sufficient oxygen. Thick blood (high fibrinogen and triglycerides and heavy metals) would be a causative factor in this, as would be the hardening/narrowing of the already microscopic little pathways that feed the brain.
Second, I suspect the carotid artery has some of the same gunk in it. Again, this can be roto-rootered out (not with real Roto-Rooter, just in case you’re a mindless, scum-chewing, blithering idiot…wow. How’s that for a legal disclaimer? Yeah. I liked it, too. Thank you. I bet McDeath’s wishes they could put something like that on their HOT COFFEE.) EDTA is the key, or so the theory goes. Combined with other therapies (the niacin, Linus Pauling’s C/Lysine therapy, and my already excellent diet), I will be 100% very soon.
The challenge is simple: this sucks.
But will it stop me from training? HELL NO. Once was enough, and this isn’t nearly as bad as it was — but it’s still a drag, let me tell you. Perhaps it was just an off night. No matter — I’m being 100% proactive about this, as nothing (repeat, nothing) will deter me from my goal of achieving my best condition ever in 2006. This goal goes way beyond “narcissism”, as most of you realize — for those of you who don’t…you suck.
(Please email me your names so I can add you to the “Stuff That Sucks” sidebar, okay? M-kay.)
So guys, chime in and help me with my own challenge. The tables have turned. The tail wags the dog. The teacher becomes…oh, hell, I’m still the boss in this joint.

Cool new look!
You have inspired me to do the most I can given my set of circumstances. So, because my lower body is the only thing I can lift with, I’ve been blasting that, pretty much since I started 10 in 10. Yesterday for the first time in awhile I saw a nice quad with separations pop up out of my pants! I love muscle; if you feed it and grow it, it doesn’t fail to make itself known. Thanks for the push!

Your dedication is awesome and inspiring. But the nurse in me is a little concerned about your post-workout orthostatic hypotension. I am sure that you have seen a doctor and have had a complete work-up. I know that you don’t have much faith in traditional medicine and doctors, but at least it can rule out some obvious stuff before you search for answers and treatments “outside the box”. I am dying to know if your alt. treatments will work. In the meantime, keep your chin up (unless you get dizzy, then keep it down:) ) I am pulling for you. I know how frustrating it is to take really good care of your body, only to have it betray you. (that sounds overly dramatic, but sometimes it feels that way.)
Continued success to you. And love the new look. Keep up the great work.

Jon,
Really enjoyed the “Who the?” on the main page. Just wondering, what’s with your fingernail discoloration? Is it chalk, or did the blood run out of them to keep your old pants up?
Last 4 days have been rough, had to lay off upper body and bike because of a torqued rib in my upper back. Ouch all through my neck and arm. My doc, a naturopath, told me to lay of the upper until the situation resolved. I said I’d just do some vigorous walking and then I just didn’t follow through, even though I’d written in down and down again. Gained 3 pounds of water weight…..fuck that scale man. Anyway, like many times before, I’ve lost my path. But I’m not willing to wander much more than these 4 days.
Guess I need some ass kicking, but my legs just can’t get into that position…..
I will get there!

To Cherie:
Thanks for both the kudos on the look and the nod on the help. It’s great to hear that you’re progressing like you are, too!
To Lori:
Oh, I did the medical rounds. Went something like this:
“Uhhhhh…..beats me.”
“That will be $4,000.00.”
This was FOUR different specialists and GPs. All four with the same reaction. All four wanted to REPEAT the stuff the others did prior (except the first…he’s off the hook). All FOUR wouldn’t listen to any reason whatsoever, nor discuss the situation longer than their 8 minutes allowed…nor suggest alternatives.
Fun stuff. Like the sidebar says…most doctors suck.
Seriously, they were just as befuddled as I was, and of course my first action was to rule out the obvious. No one will do a cath on me for obvious reasons: all tests are normal. Balke Stress, echo, thallium stress…you name it.
Of course my lipids are high (always have been; I have FHC but heart disease doesn’t run in my family. Doctors love that fact; that FHC patients have lower heart disease rates than the rest of the population.)
Blood pressure: normal. Sugars: normal.
It was only during a conversation with a doctor who doesn’t suck (a member of Thincs.org), a former invasive cardiologist who now does 1/100th the amount of open heart surgery thanks to CoQ-10…heh…he makes me smile) that the term “viscous blood” was tossed out, oddly enough by yours truly. He chimed in and said, “YEP….first thing that makes sense so far given the other test results.” So, that’s the approach we’re taking: giving blood and thinning it without hard-core thinners and lowering trigs to make it less gooey. : )
One would think that ONE of those four docs would have mentioned this. I only came up with the theory while pumping gas. Seriously. I saw a sign that talked about “engine viscosity” and the light went off in my head: “I bet my blood is a thick as a senator’s head!”
Since I refuse to treat the condition by treating the symptoms (read: drugs that thin the blood and only thin the blood), here’s nothing left to do but use alternative (read: effective) means of treating the problem. As soon as your employers realize that billions of Easterners can’t all be wrong, the better off our medical system will be.
Thank you for your concern, really…but yes, all ruled out.
To Jim:
I was hoping someone would read that… : )
I paint my fingernails…but I forgot to remove the black from that one nail.
Kidding. Smashed it in a ‘very’ interesting way. I even have a close-up of it on my personal website.
Here’s what happened: I was leaving a friend’s house very late. I had my food (which I carried to yet another inappropriate group event, but did I CARE? NO!) in that hand. I changed hands before leaving (bear in mind I was very tired) and when I did, I swung the other hand around without looking and, while walking, smashed that finger against a large table and…get this…
my thigh.
Yeah. It was complete mixed emotions, between “Oooohhhhhh mothua#$&#)*#$)” and “Hey, my LEG is hard as a freakin’ ROCK!”
Yeah baby. That was kinda cool. So my leg muscle didn’t give and neither did the table. We showed that pinky who’s boss, let me tell ya. I will have finger-smashing thighs (now THAT is a unique description the bodybuilding mags should pick up on) again in a matter of months. At that point I may register them as lethal weapons.

Way to go with that scale, Jim…be sure to wear protection.
Sorry to hear about the injury, but water comes and goes as quickly as the English language from our leader’s noggin.
Just keep that head up and focused on the long-term driving points.

Hi Jon! I’m down with the new look. I love new…. and change for that matter.
I too share your thoughts and opinions on Western medicine.
However, due to some tripped out virus I contracted over ten years ago, I owe my life to Western medicine. I respect it, for what it is.
Western’s typical “put a band-aid on it” approach leaves alot to be desired. That’s why it is up to each of us to be more pro-active in our approach to health.
I find it hard to find alternative health providers. Can you share with us what we should look for when searching for alt. therapy….rather than the phone book, close eyes, and where ever my finger lands
approach that I now use?

Jon, I LOVE the new look - it’s very, very cool.
I am so sorry to hear about your dizziness and its return. I know how disappointing it can be to not be able to get back to your “regularly scheduled program”.
I had knee problems for a couple of years, couldn’t run and had a hard time doing a full workout. Then I had a problem with my feet - not an issue with the plantar’s facia (again, a “ya got me” from the doctor) but painful enough that I couldn’t walk very well let alone run.
I kept going but it became depressing to be in pain, not know why, miss races, etc. Acupuncture really helped me though I am sure you’ve probably already checked that out.
I am inspired by your dedication and determination to keep on keeping on! I am looking forward to hearing how your alternative therapies work so do keep us “blogged” in.
I worked through a rotator cuff irritation recently and am working on a tight, irritated hamstring (all of the running perhaps) but know that if I just keep going - using lighter weights and staying with it, it will eventually correct itself.
I feel for you and wish you the very best. I know you will attract the best therapy for your situation right to your door.

Thank you! I appreciate the kudos and the tip on your blog. Very cool. : ) Long live sane insanity. (Hey, another TM? : )
To Kenny:
It’s really vital to make this connection: I don’t believe all doctors suck; merely the majority. The ones that don’t are worth their weight in plutonium. Just don’t get too ‘close’ to them…kinda strange side-effects from what I hear.
I too was ‘saved’ by modern medicine, and I take drugs to combat the aftermath; no problems with that. THIS is where Western medicine excels — emergency situations. If you break a leg, have a heart attack, or have some funky disease, the US is the place to be.
If on the other hand you have “strange” symptoms, you’ll be brushed off like dog hair on a summer day.
There’s a lot of quacks out there on both the traditional and non-traditional medicine fronts. That bozo over at QuackWatch.com seems to think that all things alternative suck.
Well Barrett — you suck. Let’s see you sue ME, ya bastige.
Actually Barrett has some good warnings, but most of his site is just BS to support the traditional MDs in my opinion. He gives thumbs-down to stuff that’s been proven to work for centuries…but OH NO, there’s NO PAPERS to support it. Brother…back in the day doctors looked at…you know…symptoms. Their patient’s feedback, perhaps. They were not married to a lab report.
Go with a good DO; the best you can find is an MD, DO. Then you’ll have both based covered. If someone thumbs-down all drugs, run. If they thumbs-down all “alternative” therapies, kick them in the nads THEN run.
That’s my philosophy, Marty. (Viv Savage — Spinal Tap keyboardist and very big loon)
To Elisa
Always a sweetie, you are.
It’s nothing at this point other than a challenge. I’m doing an interview next week with a man who’s blind and bodybuilds. I’m going to replace on of my M-Power Audios with it; he’s that cool.
THAT is a drag. This is…well, yeah. It’s a drag, but I’d rather see…unless this kills me. : )
That was a joke. Really.
You’re stuck with me for eons.

Elisa; thank you. : ) Always a blessing, indeed. Today’s blog hammered that point home while defending my heritage. : )
