Last Days By La Mer

The pictures will not do this post justice… just fyi.

This is my Thanksgiving post. No turkey…just the truth, and my gratefulness to all of you.

Currently I am sitting atop a 300-foot cliff inches away from what lies beneath me: terrain, a freeway, and unreal scenic beauty.

La Ciotat, France. Look it up. Currently however I am in-between La Ciotat and Aubagne, a town about 15 kilometers away.

You get to Aubagne by taking a long, winding, made-for-motorcycles road up the foothills of the tail-end of the Pyrenees mountains. Or by freeway.

Guess which route I took.

My last full day in La Ciotat. It’s sunny and 60 degrees. I have my motorcycle for another three hours. What better time to get away from it all?

I took the bike off-road to discover this cliff and the views you see in the pictures posted. I can see most of La Ciotat from here, kissed by the inset of the Mediterranean Sea and nestled within the jagged cliffs and rolling foothills.

All around me is green. Peace. Even with the hum of the cars beneath me there is the silent awe of nature. You just cant’ get this in Dallas, Texas folks.

Writing This Blog Overlooking The Cliffs of LaCiotat

Just me, my laptop, my iPhone…and unreal beauty from about 300 feet above sea level; LaCiotat, France. Self-portrait. Lucky shot.

Cliff-Kickin'

Listening to La Mer (NIN) and The Wild, Wild Sea (Sting) as I kick back and take it in. Just look at the sun over the sea and the city below. Wow.

Tomorrow is relegated to a full day in Marseilles with a lovely madamouiselle I met here in France. What a great way to tour the city, eh? Then a French-American get-together in downtown, followed by a night of fun.

I leave Friday early. I still have not packed. We go back to Agen, France for another month, then off to the fitness marketer’s cruise in early January.

The Mac

My baby…my Mac—inches away from doom. Cool shot though.

The view to my right

As if the view to my left wasn’t enough, here’s the view to my right…

But there’s another reason why I decided to brave the cliffs and winding roads to get to this vantage point today.

I needed to remember why I’m here.

Not here as in “here in France”. I mean HERE. On planet earth. Alive.

Moments like this are easily lost because of days like yesterday. I could have let a series of business set-backs ruin my last full day alone in the South of France, but I chose not to.

I chose to live. To explore. To regroup and capture nature on my high-tech Mac devices.

Irony at its finest.

So what happened yesterday?

I had this huge teleseminar planned on how to lose fat over the holidays. I knew the interest would be high. Since the teleseminar featured all of the contributors to my new book Every Other Day Diet 2.0 I naturally needed to brush up the homepage.

I don’t mind giving away free advice, but I have to make a living too.

Normally my teleseminars do very well business-wise and informationally speaking. People love them and, to be frank, we sell a lot of books. It’s a win-win.

Yesterday? Nothing. No books. No sales page updates (or rather a very few at the last minute) due to technical glitches the likes of which I’ve never seen.

At 1:30AM France time I signed off, a bit disappointed and pissed at myself for various reasons, and hit the rack.

When I woke up I was still bummed. “Why no sales? What when wrong? I gave and gave and gave some more… I did everything ‘right’…” Onward and so-forth.

Then it hit me: It’s not always about “sales”. I do just fine. Many people are really hurting right now financially and simply need some advice.

It’s about long-term relationships with the people I care about—my readers.

Jon with Marie in gym

Here’s Marie, days away from her competition at the World Championships, at the age of 42. I just finished a killer workout myself. It is easy to train here with this environment. She owns the gym with her husband Oliver
(He is in the picture behind us …back in the day.)

They’ll buy my books when they can. Or they’ll read and learn and share where they learned the tips with friends who will help support me.

Either way, it’s still a win-win.

And today? I sit atop a cliff that has no one in site, save the cars beneath me. I am overlooking La Mer. I am awed by the fact that I am fortunate enough to have my health, my strength, my business and my life—a life that thanks to all of you enables me to travel and write blog posts from the edge of a cliff overlooking paradise.

Sure, I work hard—too hard most of the time—but I have freedom and absolute love for what I do.

Thank you all for that.

You are the ones who made it possible. If I’ve touched some lives along the way and helped folks with issues concerning mind, meals, muscle and motion, then I’m a happy man.

Thanks to all of you, I will continue to write, share, and produce products that I know will will make a difference in your life. If you can pick them up, great. If you cannot, read on and share this site with others.

Or just read and enjoy. It all comes back in the long run.

Today, it came back in spades.

P.S. If you want to listen to the 90-minute teleseminar we did last night, here is the link. It’s free for you to listen. Please share it with others if you find it informative…

Hey Jon,

Sorry to hear things didn’t live up to your expectations (perhaps a key there - we can only be hurt or let down when we have expectations) but it’s great that you reframed it in a positive light and realized that perhaps it was enough to “strengthen the brand”. You’ve got a great attitude and and a TON to offer and I hope you at least get a lot of feedback affirming the value you put into the call, even if it doesn’t translate to immediate sales! ;) Enjoy your travels! I’d sure love be in the south of France right now.

Cheers, or should I say “sante”

Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan… that means a lot.

Yes, reframing indeed. The tech issues last night was a far more frustrating event than the teleseminar, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I always do.

It was just an odd space… all cleared out by getting out into space today.

Passez une bonne soirée,

That comment makes my night… thanks so much. Funny, the gal I’m seeing here keeps giving me that “quoi?” look whenever she checks out my iTunes playlist or sees how I live. So many people think of age as a barrier to living youthfully — never did, never will.

Thanks man… transparency is way up on my list of Core Values. I lived in Santa Monica for a year before moving around the coast, so I hear you: California is the place I wanna be (in the States), and parts of Del Mar and northern Cal could rival the scenery here. But the towns are way, way cool here!

I am now qualified; (after an 18 week apprenticship) as a Tall Ship Crew “Ordinary Seaman” . It was the most exhasting thin I have ever done in my life. Quote you :
“Sure, I work hard—too hard most of the time—but I have freedom and absolute love what I do. ”
The Senior Captain of the U.S. Brig Niagara remarked that he didn’t understand how I did the whole program. It is designed for young adults 16 to 30 Yr’s. old. I just celebrated my sixty-eighth birthday on November 13. Because of my love of Tall Ships and the sailing of them I was able to keep my body going enough to complete the training. The fact that I started whole, natural, and organic foods at age 29 might have helped a bit. Also an active life w/ 3 times a week at the gym since 31. Yes I am a fit over 40 person. Thank you for writing the books and internet postings. Now on a fixed income I watch expenditures.

Keep up the good work. ” What goes around - comes around ” (Anonymous). You will always succeed !

Hi Jon, Longtime no see.
Yeah it’sa bummer when technology goes wrong. i had a windows update take out my internet connection for over a week. A week spent on the phone with various techies unable to work that out!
And for your sales , maybe that had an impact, cos ,yes its an immediate sort of media, a website’s got 7 seconds to grab you. But on the other hand, how bad can it be when thousands want to hear you speak?
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. I did not post my condolences at the time, I’m sorry, because I had just put my mother-in-law in hospital for what was her last stay. She passed away on the 30th of August. ah dear I thought i was over tearing up. I posted a vale for her on the web soon after. Odd how powerful and immediate a medium the net has grown to. Requiring caution for us consumers ,also. That’s why it’s great we got you. Honest ,reliable, with actually researched views, not just (bought) opinions and of course great clarity and a sense of humour to boot.

Vive La France!

Hi Jon,

France is absolutely beautiful. There is great scenery everywhere. Question though you say that you are 300 feet above sea level. Isn’t it 3000? I thought France was rather mountainous and we here in South Georgia are higher than 300ft.

I just came back from doing the Horrible Hundred in Clermont Florida, great scenery there too. I guess it is all how we look at things thiough and you proved that.

A very wise man told me once the You can’t always control what happens to you or around you, but you can always control how you react to it. He was my father and if he were still with us would be 108 years of age.
He was 52 when I was born.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and wish you the best in your business, now and in the future.

I am sorry about the technical difficulties, but am glad that it has all worked out.

Have a great day and if you ever get a chance to come to South Georgia, give me a call, maybe we can go for a bike ride, only no motors. The kind I ride you are the motor.

Looking forward to hearing and seeing more of your work.

What a great way to wake up… thanks to everyone for the kind words and really cool stories. I wish I could respond to them all.

Hope everyone reads Jeffery A. Hick’s post if you are over 40 and think life is “downhill” from here. Way to kick life in the butt my man! What he said about being fit is crucial—when you are fit you can do just about anything at any time, and you can be fit an any age.

I’ve never seen anyone in my industry complain about a “lack of sales” before on a public forum read by thousands of people, come to think of it. The funny thing: That was really not why I was frustrated.

Seriously: I love you guys! Anyone who has ever been on one of my teleseminars (I plan to do them weekly next year) can hear that in my voice. I do some things that really prosper and frankly surprise me. I do others that prosper people I admire or products I enjoy. My friend Ramsey didn’t know what to do with all the Tribustol Plus sales from just one email of mine. I LOVE to see that! So what if it’s not “my” product? It will help you…period.

Last thing before I dart off to packing and a day in Marseilles (I’ll post pics later) — several of you have mentioned disease states and being on fixed income. In January 2009 I intend to do something about that.

Here’s what I mean: I do not want finances to get in the way of health. But obviously I have to make a living. So, if you are on fixed income, I plan to make certain products free of charge and others on SUPER-low payment plans (like $5 a month or something) IF I know they can help you.

This will only apply to people on fixed income and special circumstances. And I trust you all not to abuse it.

I’ve learned over the past 6 years that I have the greatest readers one could ever ask for. So, this is the least I can do for you.

Jon

P.S. About my shape: As you can tell in the pic with Marie, I’m pretty darn massive right now. I’m in the last six weeks of my Every Other Day Diet Extreme Plan bodyfat cutting phase. Gaining my mass back after such an extended layoff during my post-engagement blues and the caring for/passing of mom took a toll on my musckles. ; ) But they’re back, and I’m currently aiming to be about 9% bodyfat in January and 4-5% by March 2009. That’s when you’ll see the pics.

Don’t worry about the sales Jon. I’m not at all religious (au contraire: that’s your actual French), but the bible is right when it says that seeds sown well will bear fruit. As for me, “not guilty” on that score: I purchased FoF last year and return to it regularly. Let me tell you that the seeds you sowed on that occasion were your free 10 part e-mail course which, for me at least, was an absolute winner.
I was more focused on fat burning than muscle mass building because, as you may remember when you very kindly replied to my messages, I was keen on improving my running times in the marathon and half-marathon. In particular I really wanted to do a sub 3 hour marathon. Well, between March and August 2007 I went down from 94 kg to 74 kg and by September my half marathon time was down from 1:43 to 1:27. In December I did a marathon in 3:03, an improvement of over 40 minutes, results for which I was awarded a prize in our annual running club awards ceremony. But that wasn’t the end of it. In February another half marathon, this time in 1:25, several other marathons hovering around the 3 hours and then, in September 2008, a half marathon in 1:21. Finally, just last Sunday, I finally did a sub three hour marathon, in Milan: 2:58:24, running the second half stronger than the first (“negative split”) and finishing on full throttle with no “wall”.
I’m 47 in January. Fit over forty, eh? And getting fitter.
I’m now going to leave the running aside for a while and concentrate on putting on about 5-6 kg of lean muscle, as I’m not altogether happy with my appearance.
I believe in the fundamental principles of your EODD, but, thanks also to you and to FoF, I’ve become so disciplined that I don’t need to give theoretical grounding to going “off track”. I’d be closer to the position of your teleseminar guest Daniel, in the sense that if and when I “misbehave” I know that all my training hasn’t gone out of the window and that I can pick up again beginning the day after. I PROMISED myself that if I ever did a sub 3 marathon I would get nicely drunk and maybe even puff a couple of cigars, but I just can’t, because something inside won’t let me. Perhaps it’s because, when beconing a member of FoF, I sort of made a promise that I would remain fit for the rest of my life and that the crazy days are a thing of the past that I don’t need anymore (I think I’m quoting a Johnny Cash number here).
Anyways, that’s my two cents’ worth. Enjoy France, and keep sowing the seeds. From your old buddy, fan and pupil, Paul

John, I have been a loyal reader and “fan” since the ten in ten blog days. I lost 20 in ten, but eventually fell off the wagon (I’d beent hrough a lot of jacko). This June, I had reached 244 pounds, not that far off from my all time high of 265. I woke up this morning at 193 pounds. I owe you much for the knowledge and mind set that helped me to do this.

Right now I am involved in more than one transformation. I started a new business, coaching teenagers on the SAT and college admissions, but the business is building slowly, and every dollar is needed to pay half the blls, so as much as I want to, I can’t buy the EODD YET.

Here is my offer, “loan me a copy” and I will pay full price as soon as I am able, and will give you extensive feedback (including kick ass healthy recipes built on its principles) to make version 3.0 the best it can possibly be.

Thanks for everything Jon, whether you take me up on the offer or not. You are an inspiration.

A little late in the day, but I’d like to wish u a Happy Thanks Giving, as I know this celebration means a lot to people from the USA! Also don’t despair over the odd slump in sales, after all you are having a great time in France ….. a bonus in itself & I’m happy to know you appreciate the diversity, beauty & wonderful food we have access to here in Europe, as I spent two months driving across the States two winters ago & also enjoyed parts of your country, particularly, California, Arizona & Colorado, but can honestly say …… & I was treated to the best by my companion ….. I despair of your diet & the absurd potions that seem more important than quality, especially the fact that sugar seems to permeate everything, to name one criticism in a country that has so much to offer, but not a great deal of variety considering its size….. which is a shame.
So I realize how hard it is for you to sift through the junk & eat a healthy diet.
I was also amused & happy to hear your story about your night out, as often wonder do you health nuts ever let go & really enjoy yourselves ….. but was interested in how you dealth with the spike in your blood pressure, without resorting to meds or panicing, as most would in such a situation.
Lastly, I do intend ordering your Fit over 40 book, but like others I’ve read about, I’ve invested in so many programs the past months that I’m still in the midst of using & don’t want to overload, thereby achieving nothing properly! but I’m looking forward to it in the not so distant future!
Meanwhile enjoy the rest of your stay ….. I too am curious what cruise, as need a winter break soon ……. & keep up the good work, it is appreciated in these tough & troubled times.

Hi Jon,

First off, I just want to say that I’ve read about and followed innumerable diet and fitness programs throughout my young life. There is a certain level of skepticism that has come with most every program - however, I don’t feel any of that when I read about any of your books. I’ve been following your ezine and reviews for a while now, and I’m certainly starting the EODD and 7MM right before the new year. My question to you is: will I be able to use resistance bands for 7MM? I’m a graduating student and both a gym membership and a couple sets of dumbbells would put me over the edge. Thank you for all your inspiration: I’m hoping that this is going to be the way that I finally achieve all my goals!

Your timing is perfect: We are releasing 7 Minute Muscle In-Home next week, and almost every exercise (illustrated with photos and instructions) uses bands and/or bodyweight. You can use dumbbells if you have them as well.

If you own 7 Minute Muscle, this book is yours as a gift.

Although making a living at your work you are a great example to all of us. From your records you will see that I subscribed to Mind Muscle etc program but as my computer crashed and was replaced I omitted to save it. Is it possible to resend once your team have verified my membership.

My biggest problem is at 72 years of age and recovering from major(brain surgery for tumour last year) that my ‘reasonable fitness has gone out of the window and weight increased (25lbs overwight) and I cannot sum up the willpower to make the effort now even though I realise it is essential …Can you suggest an answer have tried to a limited extent pace/interval but GP advises against too strenuous as High BP and cholesterol. Thanks Jon and keep up the good work …you make the difference! Regards James

Hi James,

No problem — I just sent it to you by email.

At 72, you can do much more than you may believe. I learned this while writing Fit Over 40 and reading the stories of folks who started in their 60s and even 70s.

Hang in there — and I really do think M-Power will help you get back on the horse.

Jon
