The things we do for love

You remember that song?

I don’t. Really…not even a vague recollection.

So, here I was, walking around in the rain. It was about to snow, and I really didn’t have a place “go” per-se…

That was me in New York. New Year’s Eve 2004. I was crazy about this girl I just dumped. Strange what we do for love, isn’t it? You give up so much of yourself, but then you have to draw the line if you’re going to survive. I drew the line, but it hurt like hell.

Everyone this side of Vulcan was telling me this girl was the bastard child of that brat from The Omen, but the heart has reasons that reason knows not of.

I didn’t write that…some other poet-type did.

Delicate mate;
Fragile bonds, never broken.
Mended hearts in a miracle dance
Welcome now this duet of souls.

I did write that…so paws off or I’ll sue.

By golly, the witty brute and self-appointed “Fitness Humorist King” actually has a tender side. I was even up for poet of the year once. I think I would have one a free hat and a bowl of soup, but just think of the perks.

No, please…think of them. Then email me, ‘cause I can’t think of a single one.

Jon, get to the point for cryin’ out…hey, that poetry isn’t bad man! I know that’s what you’re thinking. I planted bugs in your ears last night, just like Khan did to Chekov and that other dude who wasn’t named after a famous playwrite in Star Trek II. Same Khan-like plot really…well, my bugs are more like transceivers, my chest is real, and I’ve never worked with midgets professionally.

Here’s my point, Mr. and Mrs. I’M IN A HURRY…get fit, get lean, drop that fat like a redneck drops out of junior high, but for the sake of all that’s sane, do not do this for love.

Yes, you’ll look better. Yes, you’ll feel better. And, yes, you’ll probably either (a) be more attractive for your mate; or (b) land chicks or hunks like the QB on prom night if that’s your gig. It just won’t buy you love.

One step further: don’t do it for someone you love because they want you to. I’ve asked others to do it and what a schmucky thing THAT turned out to be. Oh, I’m smooth…but I knew on the inside.

The Spawn of Satan Girl mentioned above?…yeah, her. She was the same way with me. I was already in good shape of course, but “not healthy enough” for her liking. The pressure was both Karma and Hell combined.

I learned my lesson, now I’m preaching it to you…do this for yourself.

I’m 100% behind someone doing it for the love of family. I encourage my clients to look at their children and think of the example they’re setting. Think of how Junior talks about daddy in the classroom. “He’s a mean old fatty-watty” is not what you want to find out the going rumor is as relayed to you by Ms. Tessmocker during Parent’s Night. That’s Junior’s 2nd grade teacher, and assistant to Lex Luthor.

Do it because you want to give your family a wonderful treasure; the full expression of love for your self. It’s a wonderful gift. Hey, do it because you want to give your future spouse the best “you” possible. That’s cool…it’s on my attraction statement list.

Just don’t deceive yourself into thinking a better body will get you a better love life. A better ‘life’, yes…but love is a crazy thing.

Sometimes, you know, you just…I dunno…you feel like a part of you is dy….

DAMN YOU 10 CC!!

(Workout was a repeat of last week’s training…muscles are stronger and already coming back to life. Yea me!)

My MasterMeal Plan
MM1: Organic beef cooked in organic beef broth with veggies only
MM2: Chicken And Rice
MM3: FullStrength Nutrition Shake *
MM4: Alternative Meal: 3 slices pizza

* Yeah, yeah…I know, I know…I told you ‘real food’. Well, you know what? I dig this new nutrition shake by Shawn Phillips. You’ll never guess who designed the logo and brand…yep.

I was a designer for 14 years.

I’m really, really bored.

Anyhoo, Shawn was kind enough to send me a box which I kept unopened for months. Then one day I tried it (didn’t want to ruin the portfolio piece, you know, but hunger rules.)

Freakin’ awesome stuff.

The major protein and relatively limited carbs makes it an ideal macronutrient split for me, and the taste is the best I’ve ever tried. Plus I know what Shawn put into this stuff. I even grilled him on “natural flavors.” His chemist answered the question to my liking. It’s REAL natural flavors (I’m sworn to secrecy, but it’s nothing you’ve never heard of.)

Top of the line in my book. No, don’t sell the stuff. Wish I did. I’m going to try. So, there you have it…I’ll be having at least a few a week now. Still, 95% whole food…and I would not have this if the protein wasn’t so hard-core. It took me a good 2.5-3 hours to get hungry again the first time I tried it and again today before my alternative meal (that was planned, by the way…and one reason I had the shake.)

Check it out at Full Strength Online. Tell Shawn that Jon…no, scratch that…”Agent Taylor from the FBI” referred you. That’ll grab his attention. Just don’t live on the stuff. Live on love. Remember: man cannot live on bread alone, mainly because bread sucks. {10}

Hello Jon,

I have been reading your blog since day 1 and have a question not particularly related to the above entry, but related to nutrition:

Are you concerned with how much red meat you are consuming?

I have discarded 44lbs of fat since starting Tom Venuto’s BFFM in January 7th this year by exercising and eating regular meals. This brought a lot of attention and questions from colleagues when at 1100 I am sat at my desk eating chicken and rice!

Anyway, having read through loads of material and what seems like having been told everone’s opinion at work on how I should be eating, too much red meat can be unhealthy.

Just wondered what your thoughts were.

Keep up the good work!

Regards, Paul

Makes you wonder how we survived the Stone Age, doesn’t it? Not a lot of chickens.

The red meat I eat is ‘leaner’ than chicken, at least grocery store chicken. The red meat/health thing is yet another myth. I mix a lot of chicken and tuna in my meal plan. However, to answer your question…no, not at all.

Thanks!

P.S. Grain-fed beef…yeah, that’s not the best stuff you can eat. I’m talking free-range or grass-fed beef.

Good morning Jon

How much more does muscle weigh than fat? If I am working with weights and building muscle, and eating fairly correctly, my weight may not necessarily go down all that quickly ??? - is that a correct assumption? Because I am heavier today after a good week’s workout and I know I have eaten less than last week. Tell me this is muscle weight - pleeeze.

Jon,
Love this blog! I totally agree with the “don’t do it for love” thing. Does this protein drink taste better than Jay Robb’s? I tried a ton of them, and his is my favorite so far. Not for me so much, since I am focusing on “real food,” but for my teenage son who plays 3 sports. Have you tried Bison (buffalo) meat? I tried it once and now my family prefers it to grain fed beef.
Keep blogging . ..

Good Morning Jon,

Quick question about smushed nuts…not the kind if your jeans are too tight. Every so often during the day when I begin to feel a little hungry, but not hungry enough for a meal, I will eat a couple spoonfuls of 100% natural peanut, almond or cashew butter. I’ll also do this sometimes before a workout. Tastes delish and makes me feel great. Would you consider this a wise choice of nutrition? BTW, what kind of pizza did you have? Hawaiian would be my pizza of choice.

Have a great day!!!

Well if this avian flu thing really takes off (oohhh…) I guess we’ll just have to wing it (grrrr..) and get used to beef, eh?
People always complain about the “tasteless” European beef but that’s cuz out mooh-chers are fed grass! And by the way that’s why our chocolate is so good because of the grass the cows eat! So I guess that means if grass makes healthier cows, we should eat more chocolate!

I’m in on the 10/10. I need to challenge myself to get rid of this snack demon that comes out at night. I’ll do my workout and eat six small meals spaced throughtout the day. I find it difficult not to eat after 8pm. I work evenings from 3p-11pm reach home about 12am and raid the kitchen. I’ll use the 10/10 challenge to finally put an end to the snacking in the wee hours of the morning. “Lead by example.”

Judy;

Lead by example, indeed. Great motto…one I’m undertaking (and have for years), so I can attest to the challenge. However, the challenge is well worth it! Keep us all posted on your success, and welcome!

To Marloe:
Muscle weight about 5x as much as fat, or so the theory goes…however, 5 pounds of muscle is the same, of course, as 5 pounds of fat. So the theory is FUBAR. Kinda. Boy, is this every a round-about answer!

Check out this pic:

http://www.mpowerseries.com/images/fat-v-muscle.jpg

As you can see, muscle is more ‘dense’ than fat. Also, muscle is ‘active’ tissue, where fat just sucks (literally…the blood, the oxygen, the life, etc.)

The myth got started by figuring out how much more energy was required to keep muscle alive than fat. The finding (rough) was basically equal to 5 pounds, or roughly 16,000 kcals of energy.

Bottom line: muscle rules, even if it’s an ounce or a ton heavier.

If you are a beginner or have laid off for a while…yes, your physical weight may not change for weeks or even months if you put on muscle easily. That’s why 10 is not based on WEIGHT, but on FAT. 10 pounds of FAT. I could care less how much you physically weigh, as I know that most people, once the fat is gone, will weigh much less no matter how much muscle they pack on.

To Jeanne:
I love Jay’s stuff, but yes…does indeed taste better. Love bison!! Anything I can tip or outrun…

To Anna:
I’ll let the group address this, but it’s a great workout. Kinda long, but hey…if you can PROGRESS every workout in some area, you’re right on target.

To Bonnie Sue:
My jeans are rarely that tight…or….oh, nevermind. : )

Keep the nuts to a minimum when shedding fat. Don’t know ‘why’, but they seem to want to create problems for a lot of people despite being healthy. Coconut is cool.

Pepperoni… : )

To Lee:
What’s German for “mooooo”?

I finally got a good full cardio workout in this morning. Tomorrow is weights. Waking up early was rough and I’m pretty sure I’ll be sore tomorrow but it’ll be worth it. Now I just need to get my eating under control. Unfortunately, right now there’s only a 12 pack of diet coke in my fridge. I should probably do something about that.

P.S. great blog!
