With Gratitude…
For those of you who responded to my post yesterday, this is for you.
I have said this many times before, but never have I felt it more than now: “I have the coolest list in the business!” (“List” is just marketing terms for subscribers and readers.) I have been utterly overwhelmed by the response my post from yesterday regarding the passing of my mom has received.
Obviously there’s no way to respond to every one of you, but I want you to know with utter sincerity how valuable each and every message is to me. How much this helps. How much value it holds. And how reassuring it is that in some small way I can touch or empower your life.
Basically I’m saying YOU have helped me to keep going. Do better. Raise my own standards. Give more to this “extended family” as I refer to it.
Let me be honest (as if I could do otherwise) — as some of you eluded, the Internet can be a cold and sterile place. One gentleman stated that he never trusts internet marketers… yet he did this one time I suppose. Earning your trust means the world to me. And I do ‘not’ consider myself an “internet marketer”—I’m a guy who is passionate about helping others live better and healthier lives who just so happens to (by necessity) employ marketing via the web. It’s no different than Sam’s marketing via the Sunday paper really. The bottom line is simple: Is what you’re delivering helping others or not?
I do love marketing as it’s just…well, fun. Kinda goofy in places. But it’s really fun to do when you know for a fact you’ll be delivering something of substance and quality. I always said I’d stand in the rain in a Girl Scout’s dress if it would help someone decide to buy a book I know would change their life. Just…well, don’t hold me to that one!
That being said, I’m really going to focus on taking care of you — my ‘extended family’ if you will — and that is a wonderfully rewarding process. I’ve been fortunate to be able to make a living doing what I love to do and helping others in the process. That will continue. In fact, work is a solace right now, and we already have exciting things in store for all of you in the coming weeks and months.
Life must go on, and that’s exactly what my mom would have wanted. She was one of the first “working women”—way ahead of her time in that regard. She learned morse code. She dove into a career when most women married right away (especially given her looks… ; )
Then she met my dad. Lights out. She said at that moment, “I’m with him.” Pretty amazing story really. Of course my father was a stud, so go figure. She never regretted that decision, and even went back to work before and after I was born. My dad? 36 years in the same job. Outside in the Texas heat and cold. Never missed a day. EVER.
Man, he was a rock.
I say these things to stress two issues: First, I was raised with a hell of a work ethic. I hope that shows in the quality of work I produce, at least most of the time. Second, I’m a real guy. Real values. Real everything. Don’t let the marketing fool you: It’s all true, to be sure, but the guy on the other side is, well, quite human.
That said, here’s an update on where I’m at with things many of you have been asking me about:
I’ll be in touch next week with some updates on the Second Edition of EODD which was put on sudden hold two weeks ago when all of this started and will be picked back up again this weekend as soon as my focus returns.
“Yes”, there is actually going to be a 7 Minute Muscle Body Transformation Contest. About 500 or so folks emailed about that as it leaked out in an interview I did. I can’t wait — this will be fun. We’re just working through the legalese and so-forth, but it’s for anyone who uses the 7 Minute Muscle System and has the will and passion to change their body over 90 days. The Grand Prize will be … well, there’s “7s” in there. I’ll put it that way. Details coming soon.
“Yes” to Scale The World — people have been asking about the upcoming videos. In case you have not gone through this free program I created (without my name on it except in the press release), just click here. For the past two years this free program has circled the world (ha) and you would not believe the mail I get. I can’t even read it most of the time as it’s just too much to take in.
I wanted to make this free, and did, so as many people could benefit from it as possible. I’ll make some of the videos free as well, but obviously filming 30 videos is expensive. Still… it will be affordable to just about anyone. I want to keep this as a gift to the world. Not to sound like an arrogant guy, but it’s the best gift I can give being a lowly writer. Heh. More than fitness, Scale The World is about our “personal mountains”. Feel free to go through the course now and enjoy the 32 days (35 actually) of free content. Let me know how it helps you out.
“Yes”—M-Power lives. And it’s about to live all 48 audios at a time. The work was done prior to the events of this month. Had a big announcement set up. Can’t wait to share this one with you all.
My “Top 500” get it free. My gift to you. Who are the Top 500? 250 are the oldest subscribers (not in age, but by date.) Some of you guys/gals have been around since 2004! You deserve this big-time.
The other 250 are the ones who have supported me and my books/products over the years the most. Again, you deserve it. But many of you already did M-Power.
If you went through M-Power already, I’d like to use your coupon and give it to someone who simply cannot afford to go through it at all. I’ll make sure you’re covered with a gift you can use.
My goal is to give away at least 100 memberships to those without jobs or on fixed income who are lucky enough to have a computer or access to one via the library. So let’s make that happen.
“Yes” — there actually IS a CoreAerobics.com DVD series coming out. No, really. My partner Clark Bartram was booked on a fitness and video tour in China for quite some time, and then all of this other stuff happened with my mom, so it too got pushed back. But we’re cranking it back up and you’ll be hearing about it very soon.
I get about 100 emails a week from people asking about “working out at home”, so Clark and I shot these DVDs on location in San Diego last year with a really “throw-back” style of core work (hence the word “aerobics”… very retro, very effective!) We built this to ensure that total beginners (5 minutes of work made for anyone in any shape, literally) to the truly advanced (45 minutes that I cannot even get through) would be something that’s fun and doable without any equipment, right in your den.
I’ve been excited about this for a while now. Putting it off wasn’t easy. After I get past this week, we’ll be back on track for release.
There’s more — including several free gifts I will be giving everyone on my lists. No strings man… just a sincere from the heart “thank you” for allowing me to do what I do, and for allowing me to help you do what you do even better.
In fact, I’m making it a policy to ensure at least a gift every quarter to everyone. Not a cheesy 5-page something or other, but something really valuable. I’ll figure it out.
Finally (wow, long blog…. sorry…) I want more interaction with you guys. Not just blogs — videos and audios.
So I want to set up a 100% always free Teleseminar for anyone who wants to come. I want to call it the Fitness Town Meeting. There are probably better names, and feel free to shoot them over to me, but the idea is solid. Just an hour-long chat with questions about whatever you want to talk about.
The only challenge is volume. I think I can get 500 lines, but there are gobs and gobs of you…and then there’s the wonderful folks in Australia, New Zealand, the UK — so many of you guys and gals email me all the time and I love it. Honored to have you! Given your time zone I’ll have to work around this somehow. I’ll probably schedule one month’s call in the afternoon US time to help you out and the next in the early evening. Something like that.
Give me a month on this one. I need to line up the tools to do it right. But I think this will be a lot of fun and something you can always count on to be free, informative, and exciting.
Okay, gotta go.
In case you’re wondering… yes. I write to recover and heal. It helps. Even the “business” stuff helps.
Most of all you help.
Thank you all for that.

Jon, you are one heck of a person. I have been following since I was interested in getting a better life all around. Not as long as those people from 2004 :-). I feel bad I did not post on your blog to your mom. I just figured ya did not care if you heard from me (attitude problem I need to rid myself of) and could not think of anything all that reaching to say. But I’ll say it now. This blog enforces it even more. Your parents had to be nothing less than spectacular. You’re the only one out there that is always honest and cares so much for everyone. I think may people would agree with me that your blog gives me a lot of hope and renews my energy to keep shooting for my best. Not to may people can reach so many people that way without being face to face with them. So thank you Jon! I am also going to have to get the seven min. So I can enter this contest. Perhaps the prize can be to shake the hand of the man that help the winner make such amazing progress? Just a thought. Keep up the great work Jon! Can’t wait for the next blog.

Wow Ted… makes my day to read this. Thank you so much for the kind words, and btw: your words are always welcome. We all have our ‘issues’ you know, and that’s cool. Takes a big person to say so.
The winners will definitely get a handshake, although the credit will go to them for the hard work, that’s for sure!

John,
You are an inspiration. The world is a far better place with you in it.
Im not sure if I have been around since 2004 however I have walked this path with you and others for quite a while. From beginning with Fit over 40 to the Easiest diet in the world and the EODD, to Scale the world and 10in10, our journey is always dynamic and relevent.
Looking forward to many more years to come.

And again:
Ted hit the nail on the head. Jon is a REAL person, who adds a really nice feel to his corner of the web. I am much more likely to be interested in stuff from somebody who walks the walk, talks the talk and comes from the heart.
Jon, keep up the good work.

Jon,
Though I offer them, condolences are often simply not enough. I’m sorry for your loss. It is good to see you doing what your mum would want though—-The thing your mum would want most is for you to keep Living—not just to “continue”. I salute your courage during a challenging time in your life.
Now….
Go pick up your bass. Right now.
Play for awhile, and remember. It will help—-that I can promise.

I have started using 7MM, coupled with EODD, and a challenge … you betcha! Count me in :)
Life is full of surprises. It holds joys, pains, fun, boredom, challenges, victories, and ultimately .. death. There is little any of us can do about it, except live life to the fullest and honor those who walked before us.
As I get older, I find myself more and more often remembering things about my grand parents - a lot heard from my dad as my grandfather died when I was 2, but I do have vague memories of him - and appreciating the tryths in what they said better now as an adult than I did as a child, a teen or even a young adult.
I wish I had listened and learned more when they were with me. All I can do now, is believe they are watching me and are proud of what I have become and what I am doing.
Life does go on. Painfully at first, then a little easier as we tend to remember the good times and repress the less good (if there were any).
My parents are scheduled to arrive in 11 weeks, a little over a month after their 50th wedding anniversary. I do believe I’m going to cook them a meal fit for royalty, even though it won’t be on the day itself!
Thanks Jon, for making me - and probably many more - realise how important parents are, even as we grow older and are parents (or at an age of being parents) ourselves.

Just discovered the blog a couple of days ago. Sorry to hear about your loss.
I bought FitOver40 a few weeks ago and have been doing your 15 min workout for the past 3 weeks and love it.
You might consider something like UStream.com or Stickam.com for your town meeting. I know Leo Leporte gets thousands of viewers. But if you want to do audio that’s cool too.
Keep up the good work.

Jon, I’m sorry about your mom, an experience that no one should have to go through yet inevitable for all of us. There is nothing that I can offer that hasn’t already been said but I would like you to know that I so admire your tenacity to move forward within the area where you exceed, and for your selfless sharing of this paticular time in your life. Your a credit to your mom and I’m sure she is aware.
I work two jobs to keep all afloat so I find very little time to spend on my computer.. I’ve been a bit lazy also. You have inspired me to make that extra attempt. I’ll read the balance of your email this weekend and see what I can do to once again motivate myself.
Thanks for your energy, your informative conversation and your openess.

Jon, my heart goes out to you and your family. From your writings it is easy to see just how wonderful your parents were and just how much love you have for them. And by your actions and motivations, it is obvious they did a wonderful job at teaching and raising you to be the man you are today.
I truly believe this mortal life is not the end of our journey together as a family, but only the beginning of an eternal relationship. God bless you as you continue to bless the lives of others, myself included.

Dear Jon,
Please accept my condolences on the death of your mother. I’m so happy for you that you had a strong, mutually nourishing and very loving relationship with her, and with your dad, too. My dad died a few years ago, and I still miss him. But he’s right here, you know. I see him when i look in the mirror. I hear him in my brother’s chuckle. I see his hands in my own. I was able to tell him I love him and that I am proud of him before he died. That was cool. You, too, had the great gift of being with your mother as she walked to the door to the Underworld. Thank you for your moving and celebratory words about your mom. I wept.
And Jon, let me say, too, please take your time to grieve. you don’t have to be in such an all-fired hurry to get back to work. It’s good, it’s important to stay engaged in the world, and active, but I hope you have some space in your days to just miss her. to feel sad…be gentle with yourself.
I hope you don’t think me too forward when i say that. I wish you peace, Jon, and continued loving in your life.
best wishes,
Erin

Thanks again, all of you, for the kind words of support.
Erin — several have mentioned this aspect of getting back to work, and while I agree that under normal circumstances it would be rather strange to do so, under mine it is not.
I had about seven months to prepare for this. I did a lot of grieving early in the year. I shut down entirely for several months. I didn’t train, I didn’t work (save a few emails here and there), and so-on.
Then I found the groove again three months ago work-wise and I haven’t looked back. Honestly, I have to find the groove again in the “take care of Jon” aspect of my life, but that too will come. But the work ‘is’ a solace, and I’m engaged in some of the most intriguing projects ever.
So many thanks for your concern, but rest easy: I’m not in denial. And I’m taking plenty of time these days to continue to grieve. The hardest part is probably past. Sudden passing is much more traumatic I think. Plus I know how Mom left this world. It’s hard to be too upset with the universe over that gift of dignity and, frankly, an 8-year extension on mental clarity and life.
Eight years… well, almost eight. 7.6 to be exact. All because mom decided to take a few supplements, workout in the gym three days a week (yes folks, with weights, and she was 76 when she started), and alter her diet. She followed my Every Other Day Diet principles, but certainly not to an excessive degree. Enough to get the job done. And she walked…and walked…and walked. Two miles every day no matter what. She loved it. Her 80-year-old neighbor joined her. He’s in excellent shape, but she’d end up pushing him!
Mind you, we “bought” nearly eight years of clarity. Real life. Not just “existing”. She was on the downhill road big-time after my father died in 2000. She was already repeating herself every 4-5 minutes, often 20 times within the scope of a visit. This almost completely disappeared after we made these modest changes. Within six months she stopped repeating herself and right up until she fell her repetition of phrases (common with dementia) was ‘maybe’ once in a conversation over hours. Perhaps twice. Huge difference.
She drove her car up to the very day she was placed in assisted living. In fact, she drove herself TO the assisted living facility. How’s that for independent? This was after her head injury. Of course I didn’t know she had a spare set of keys, otherwise that never would have happened, but hey… that was mom. Quite the little fireball.
Dementia demands special care, and Silverado Senior Living was indeed a special place, full of people who loved the elderly and knew how to deal with this disease.
Wow, I got a bit carried away with this reply. Sorry all. ; )
